Does Sound Actually Help? Here Is What the Science Says — Honestly.

The research on sound-based neuromodulation is genuinely promising. It is also still evolving. We want to be honest about both of those things, because we think you deserve that — and because we think the honest version is actually more interesting than the inflated one.
Here is what we know.
Binaural beats work by presenting two slightly different frequencies to each ear. Your brain processes the difference between them and generates what is called a beating frequency — a third signal that does not exist in the audio itself but is produced entirely by your brain. When this beating frequency falls in the range of theta waves (4 to 8 Hz), research has shown reductions in self-reported anxiety, improvements in focus tasks, and changes in cortisol levels. The effect requires headphones, because the two frequencies must reach each ear separately.
Monaural beats are pre-mixed — both frequencies combined in a single audio channel before it reaches your ears. They do not require headphones and work through any speaker. The research base is smaller than binaural, but the mechanism is similar and the early findings are consistent with brainwave entrainment effects.
Isochronic tones are single tones that pulse on and off at a precise rhythm. The regular on-off pattern provides a rhythmic stimulus that the brain can synchronise with.
